What is Upper GI surgery?

Upper GI Surgery refers to the management and surgery of diseases which involve the upper half of our digestive system.

This includes organs such as the gallbladder, the liver, the stomach, the oesophagus (gullet) and the small intestines. Common problems which affect these organs include gallstones, pancreatitis, acid or gastro-oesophageal reflux, and stomach ulcers. Surgery for obesity (also termed bariatric surgery) is also performed by upper gastrointestinal surgeons, as the surgery involves operating on the stomach and small intestines.
