Avril Chang graduated in 1988 from Monash University Medical School in Australia with Honours.  She embarked on surgical training and gained her Fellowship of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1997.

She underwent specialist laparoscopic and upper gastrointestinal training in the UK at Leeds General Infirmary and St. Mary's Hospital in London.  She was entered into the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery in 1999.  She has full membership of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS), the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI), the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) and the British Medical Association (BMA).

Her interests are in all aspects of gallstone diseases and the surgical treatment of obesity.  She specialises in performing laparoscopic (key-hole) surgery for all operations which she undertakes.

She is also heavily involved in the teaching and training of junior surgeons particularly on the practical aspects of laparoscopic surgery and on maintaining a high standard of safety in surgery and the operating environment.

Her practice philosophy is to provide patients with the best operation tailored to them whilst minimising the trauma and time of recovery by performing keyhole surgery where appropriate.
